T
hose of you who are either new to game engines or an old hand getting back into it would be well advised to download at least a couple of candidates to see what you prefer, because personal preference might be the deciding factor. Beyond the time invested, it’s free to download an engine and follow some tutorials to gain an overall impression.
Your eventual goal might be a factor, too. For example, if you’re learning games programming as you go and you fancy making a 2D game, then Godot might be the perfect choice. Unity is highly capable for 2D and 3D game development but has more of a learning curve, and yet it has the largest community of all of the engines here. In fact, looking up tutorial videos from so many enthusiastic creators might be what sucks you into the world of Unity. There’s no getting away from the sheer number of successful indie games that are made using Unity.
