The Virginia singer-songwriter and Boygenius member tells Gary Walker how hearing James Murphy’s third album as a teenager set her on a paThof musical discovery

LCD Soundsystem

This Is Happening

I first heard This Is Happening in my freshman year at High School. It was basically a school of nerds, there were a lot of shy people. I fell into this group of people who loved music. Up until then, I hadn’t really developed my own music tastes. My dad loved Bruce Springsteen and my mum loved Prince, but other than that it was all Christian rock and musical theatre. I didn’t know about punk rock, electronic music or folk. My friend showed me this album and it was something I didn’t know existed – songwriter electronic music, poetic, joyful and emotive. I thought electronic music was just something people listened to at clubs and danced to. The first listen just captivated me, and I came back to it constantly. It was the soundtrack for a lot of early joy for me.
