Winterfylleth are firmly into veteran status now, but album eight sees them slathering on the grandeur like there’s always a taller mountain to climb. The lead guitars of The Imperious Horizon sound like the result of a brainstorm with the word ‘epic’ in the middle. It’s rare to hear a black metal band formed after the 90s who are so immediately recognisable, and it imbues their albums with a sense of charging conviction. Then, just to take the piss a bit, Primordial singer Alan Averill delivers a surprise turn on In Silent Grace, in a moment that feels so climactic given the two bands’ longstanding kinship. To The Edge Of Tyranny gives a taste of the murkier aggression that characterised their debut, The Ghost Of Heritage, but Winterfylleth have since grown into one of our most reliable suppliers of the monumental. ■■■■■■■■
