At the beginning o the Spanish Civil War, a frantic race for the construction of armoured vehicles was unleashed by both sides; in greater quantity and variety on the Republican side, since most of the industry had fallen into territory dominated by the Republic. Armoured trucks had been produced in Spain and Morocco for convoy duties during the 1920s, but with the unstable political climate in the early ’30s, the need was much greater; in July 1936 alone, at least 400 were produced for Republican militias. Initially, these vehicles were essentially trucks crudely clad with metal sheets in order to provide at least some level of protection against small-arms fire.
