Harmonising New Jersey siblings with a punk name, The Roches had been signed up by Paul Simon but wouldn’t co-operate. Then Robert Fripp saw them in 1978 and was blown away. A major-label deal and critical adoration promised the big time, but attempts to smooth off their edges and unwise support slots meant a breakthrough was not to be. “Nothing superfluous had to be added to The Roches, because they are The Roches,” they reflect. “I can’t believe we did what we did.”
