BY THE early 1960s, modernists – followers of modern jazz distinct from trad jazz fans (attrib. Daily Sketch) – had developed a taste for authentically groovy music of all kinds, predominantly black and from the US, and called themselves Mods. Randy Cozens became dedicated to the music and the style in 1962, aged 14, and was critical of the next intake, circa ’64, who went around in parkas (so last year) following The Who, Kinks and Small Faces.
