In what has been described as a ‘cost-cutting measure’, New York’s Metropolitan Opera has announced that it has cancelled a new production of Verdi’s La forza del destino by the Catalan director Calixto Bieito.

The company said that it had postponed Bieito’s Met debut indefinitely as part of a series of financial measures that have included cuts in wages and fees to curb mounting costs and tough times at the box office during the recession.
