On Sunday 20 May the Seychelles hosted the second stage of the FINA/ HOSA Marathon Swim World Series.

Despite unseasonal weather and heavy rain before event day the water was 26 degrees Celsius and air temperature 30 degrees.

The women’s 10k race began with a deep water start (instead of the more usual dive from a pontoon); 26 elite swimmers then battled through six laps.

In a close race Arianna Bridi took gold, touching home in 1h58m32s30. She was followed by Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha and Italy’s Martina De Memme, who respectively touched home in 1h58m32s60 and 1h58m33s40 for silver and bronze. Stage one winner and current Olympic title holder Sharon Van Rouwendaal finished fourth.

In the men’s race, Simone Ruffini clocked a time of 1h49m41s90 to secure the gold medal, while Great Britain’s Jack Burnell touched home second in 1h49m44s00. Germany’s Rob Muffels completed the podium, clocking a time of 1h49m46s30. Olympic champion and Marathon Swim World Series stage one winner Ferry Weertman finished fourth in a tie with Italy’s Andrea Manzi.
