Pacenotes Rally magazine Issue 181 - Sept 2019 Back Issue

English

It’s no exaggeration to say that M-Sport has been among the most significant forces in Irish, British and World Rallying for generations now, so it’s only fitting that the latest edition of Pacenotes (issue 181) pays tribute to the company and its founder’s four decades in the rally business.

Malcolm Wilson’s 40 years at the centre of the rallying world is remembered by Martin Holmes, the veteran motorsport scribe, who turns the clock back to the very beginning of the fresh-faced Cumbrian lad’s career. Expect plenty of tales of MkII Escort and Quattro-shaped antics!

The importance of M-Sport’s relationship with Ford is hard to overstate, which is why Jamie Arkle looks back to the tumultuous late ‘90s, when Malcolm and co built, designed, developed and campaigned one of the most significant rally cars of the modern era - the Focus World Rally Car.

The launch of the first Focus rally car will be forever associated with one Colin McRae, not least the Scot’s then record-breaking multi-million pound move from Prodrive to M-Sport. We’ve unearthed a classic interview where the 1995 champion discusses just that, not to mention plenty of other, equally interesting topics.

Away from Dovenby Hall, we have our customary selection of rally reports from events across the board, including coverage of Craig Breen and Paul Nagle’s recent triumph at the Today’s Ulster Rally and Irish Tarmac Championship.

To call Euan Thorburn’s 2019 season 'a success' would be a disservice to the Duns driver, what with him having already wrapped up both the Scottish and BTRDA titles. We take a closer look at his most recent events in both.

Club competitors Brian Brady, Josh McErlean and Malcolm Johnston are all 'in the spotlight,’ while other rally reports include the Grampian, Tyneside, Cork Forestry, Dogleap, Harry Flatters, Phoenix, not to mention some spectacular aerial action from Rally Finland!
