End of the line?
WITH Hallowe’en just behind us, Diary was suitably spooked to see a list of ten ‘ghost’ stations on a website called ‘urban ghosts’, where trains call only two or three times a day, or even just once a week. They are technically still open, but used by a handful of passengers every year at most. Gainsborough Central, Berney Arms and Snaith are included in the list, but Gainsborough Central has at least had some trees cleared from alongside the platform recently. On the same theme, here’s a picture of sad dereliction. Recognise it? It’s part of Birmingham Moor Street in 2002, where the terminating platforms are now spick and span and also commendably busy, thanks to Chiltern Railways. Yes – old stations can rise again!
