Ruggero Deodato’s infamous exploitation flick remains highly controversial. Following an American film crew who make contact with a tribe of cannibals, it’s an undeniably unpleasant film, which includes deeply unsettling footage of (real) animal cruelty.
On the other hand, the points it’s making about media manipulation and Western attitudes towards other cultures still feel relevant. Plus, the second half invents the found footage genre 19 years before The Blair Witch Project.
