Creationism Comes to Brazil

Conflict between science and religion remains widely discussed, especially in regard to sensitive topics such as the acceptance and teaching of biological evolution.1 This continuing controversy came to the fore with the 2009 celebration of Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his most important book, On the Origin of Species. The creationism and Intelligent Design (ID) movements continue to attempt to discredit evolutionary theory.2 Intelligent Design deliberately obscures the religious nature of its arguments3 while falsely purporting to reconcile science and religion.
