Wain Ginger Cat at Animal Therapy: The Cats of Louis Wain, Bethlem Museum of the Mind
Bethlem Museum of the Mind is a pioneering museum at Bethlem Royal Hospital, the world’s oldest psychiatric hospital, which celebrates the lives and achievements of those living with mental ill-health. Their winter exhibition, Animal Therapy: The Cats of Louis Wain will explore the life and work of this much-loved artist. Achieving fame in his lifetime (1860-1939), Wain became a household name for his instantly recognisable anthropomorphic cats that appeared in books, magazines, postcards and annuals. Considered an eccentric by many, Wain’s mental health deteriorated as he grew older and he eventually moved into Bethlem Royal Hospital where he continued to paint his uplifting pictures of cats.
