The Aviation Historian Magazine  |  Issue 9
“It was a Jaguar D-Type on steroids. It was The Rolling Stones in surround-sound after eight gallons of LSD.” That’s how a ride in an English Electric Lightning interceptor is described by journalist and aviation enthusiast Jeffrey Watson, who had the privilege of a passenger flight with No 5 Sqn RAF in 1967. And it was still a privilege even when the supersonic climb-rate out of Binbrook made the fillings pop out of his teeth. Read his story, and many more, in the ninth quarterly issue of The Aviation Historian, which marks the beginning of our third year of publication. Other features include the American plan to use heavily-armoured fighters to ram enemy bombers during World War Two; the forgotten monoplane designs of “biplane king” Henry P. Folland; the solution to the mystery of why a Qantas Short Empire flying-boat disappeared on an evacuation flight between Java and Australia in 1942; Germany’s EWR VJ101 jump-jet of the 1960s; and a look at the luxurious interior of the airship Hindenburg. All these stories, and many more, are illustrated with high-quality archive photographs and bespoke artwork.
