He always said that he’d put America first. It now seems that for President
Trump, that means America alone. Since coming to power last year, Trump has gone out of his way to isolate the US from its traditional allies and undermine the fragile world order, said Barbara Slavin on The Hill. In 2017, he defied his critics by withdrawing the US from the Paris climate accord. The great disrupter has also pulled out of the twelve nation Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade agreement; kept up a regular stream of criticism of Nato; threatened new trade tariffs that would affect European manufacturers; undermined the Middle East peace process by relocating the US’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem; and pulled the US out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. In the days before that announcement last week, President Macron of France and Germany’s Angela Merkel had both travelled to Washington to plead with the president to change his mind – to no avail.
