The subject of road safety in London has reared its head again
following the tragic death of six cyclists in the capital over the
space of just two weeks in November. Predictably, cyclist campaign
groups are pressing pro-cycling London mayor Boris Johnson to
instigate a city-wide ban on trucks during peak times, citing the
success of similar measures used in Paris (see page 6). But Johnson was
quick to go on record saying such restrictions would likely damage local
businesses and result in an influx of trucks outside of the designated peak periods – which would cause its own safety issues. He also reiterated that cyclists needed to take much more responsibility for their own safety, and said common behaviour such as wearing headphones while operating a bike in heavy traffic is asking for trouble. The debate looks set to rage on into the New Year, and we’ll be closely following its developments.
Also in the news, there are further signs that the road transport industry – and the British economy in general – is crawling out of recession with reports from the SMMT confirming a significant surge in truck sales during October. This is encouraging after a year of underwhelming trade, though not entirely surprising. Industry watchers have been anticipating a climb in registrations towards the end of 2013 as operators finally bite the bullet and invest in new Euro 6 trucks, or race to snap up the last Euro 5 vehicles ahead of the December deadline. You can read all the figures on page 8.
It appears you’ve also been busy this month, as thousands of Trucking readers took to our facebook page to vote for their favourite commercial vehicle in our inaugural Best Truck in Britain competition. The response has been fantastic – so flick to page 30 now to find out which of the six finalists you have crowned the champion!
