The sea: a source of joy for so many. We look forward all year to being able to frolic in its waves, many of us also turning to it for active pastimes, such as surfing, windsurfing and paddle boarding. We sail out on boats, go snorkelling, or just float around on a giant inflatable, enjoying the soft rocking of the water. We book trips and holidays searching for the best beaches, constantly in awe of the oceans. But rarely do we stop to consider that, despite all our love for the oceans, we are actually destroying them at a rapid rate.
From chemical and plastic pollution, overfishing, loss of biodiversity, oil spills and more, human impact on the oceans is devastating. Climate change is threatening a heartbreaking 75 per cent of the world’s coral reefs and affecting marine species.
Plastic waste is also an alarming issue –an estimated eight million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean each year.
