Rita and Michael James set up the Campaign Against Greyhound Exploitation and Death (CAGED) North West after they felt that there was a distinct lack of action against the cruelty within the greyhound racing industry which they had witnessed first-hand and researched. Rita and Michael attended numerous protests against greyhound racing at the Belle Vue Stadium in Manchester during 2011 before launching CAGED North West in 2012, which is now known as CAGED Nationwide due to its exponential growth. They said: “The cruelty cases that we learned about were horrific; the fact that any untrained person could legally attempt to destroy a greyhound using a bolt gun to the head, behind closed doors, sent a chill down our spines. We knew from then on that we had a fight on our hands and site protests alone were not going to cut it.
