CAR OF THE YEAR
Our 2018 Car of the Year is a diesel. But how can that be? Aren’t diesel engines inherently dirty and therefore a danger to public health? You could be forgiven for thinking so, given some of the recent rhetoric from politicians and the press. Yet the truth is that What Car?’s independent emissions testing proves the best modern diesels are so clean that they’re part of the solution, not the problem. No, they’re not for everyone; if you mostly do short journeys, petrol, hybrid and electric models make more sense. But diesels’ fuel economy and low CO2 emissions mean they’re still best for many. It’s crucial, then, that legislators don’t impose a one-size-fits-all policy. We’re not, either; as well as our overall champion, we’ve named twenty one category winners that use the full range of fuels. Your ideal car is among them.
