I feel a huge bubble of energy. It’s as if I’m dancing on a bouncy floor whilst singing at the top of my lungs. Except, I’m just jigging on the spot, humming cheerfully.

‘Johnny stop that, you’re driving me to distraction.’ Dad’s on his hands and knees pulling the Christmas tree around and rearranging the decorations.

‘It looked fine how it was,’ I moan, ‘I decorated it. That’s my job now. You know it is. It’s not fair. I don’t want it changed.’

‘Oh Johnny, I’m just tidying it a little, so it looks a bit more… refined.’

‘Refined?’ I try the word in my mouth, ‘refined. What’s refined mean Dad?’

‘Oh…’ he’s a bit red in the face and panting. Maybe he didn’t hear my question. I’ll ask it louder:

‘Dad, what’s refi…’

‘Johnny, cut it out would you! I have a great deal to do. Christmas doesn’t just happen by itself you know… be better if I had another pair of hands.’ He mutters the last bit but I still hear. ‘Mutters’ is a good word. I added it to my collection of words that I like last week. I feel another skip of excitement in me. Maybe. Maybe. I start jigging again. I can’t help it.
