SAINA PLOUGHS A LONE FURROW TO TAKE THE VICTORY
Betsy Saina: women’s winner
HAVING finished fifth in the women’s 10,000m Olympic race which shook the world this summer, Betsy Saina is no stranger to pushing the pace and seeing what her body can do.
With thoughts of potentially making a marathon debut in the spring next year at the forefront of her mind, she decided to put her foot to the floor at the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run and see if she could answer some questions about herself.
The answers were emphatic. Out on her own from the gun to tape, the Kenyan came home in a course record time of 67:22 in only her second half marathon – a personal best by over two minutes. Her compatriots Helah Kiprop (68:52) and Doris Changeiywo (71:34) were a distant second and third respectively.
Saina’s body responded to the longer distance in just the manner she hoped it would. Now comes the quandary of whether to go for it at 26.2 miles early next year or concentrate solely on what is sure to be another compelling contest on the track at the London 2017 World Championships.
“I can’t say yes or no. I’m going to talk to my coach and see what we can do,” said Saina of her marathon plans.

“I was telling my coach ‘we don’t know what I was meant for. I might be the next Mary Keitani or someone like that’.
