SEVERAL sports are considered significantly more dangerous than athletics. Collisions in rugby and football are frequently blamed for head injuries and concussion, while the hard balls used in cricket and hockey can cause potentially fatal impact injuries, as highlighted by the tragic death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes after he was struck behind the ear by a ball two years ago. Yet, while contact, adrenaline and ball sports shoulder the brunt of accident statistics, track and field is certainly not immune from its own problems.
