$51.7m GTO SETS FERRARI AUCTION RECORD

RM Sotheby’s posted a new benchmark for a Ferrari sold at auction on 13 November. The car, a 1962 Ferrari 330/250GTO with chassis number 3765LM, was estimated in excess of $60m (£48m: Trade news, November 2023). John Mayhead, editor of the Hagerty Price Guide UK, was at the Bond Street, London sale. “Bidding, which was mostly conducted on the telephone, rose from $40m [£32m] to a hammer price of $51.7m [£47m] in around 10 minutes,” he recalls. “This sale shows that, at the very top of the market, there is no hesitation when it comes to one of the very top cars.”

However, it is worth noting that the previous marque record-holder, 1962 GTO chassis 3413GT, which found $48.4m at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale in 2018, still eclipses the 2023 result when adjusted for inflation, at $59.3m (£47.7m). What’s more, it’s likely to be shy of some of the top GTO private sales in the past, as well as the €135m (£115m) 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold last year (Trade news, July 2022).
