There is a distinct French flavour to this month’s Dancing Times, from the cover depicting English National Ballet’s Laurretta Summerscales in Coppélia, that charming comedy ballet performed for the first time in Paris in 1870, to Barbara Newman’s review of English National Opera’s new production of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini in Variety Lights. Nicolas Le Riche, the great étoile of the Paris Opéra Ballet, gives his farewell performance with the company at the Palais Garnier on July 9 and Gerald Dowler interviews him about his illustrious career and his plans for the future. Margaret Willis talks to three dancers from San Francisco Ballet in advance of the company’s three-week season as part of Les Etés de la Danse in the French capital, and we also travel to Nancy to find out about Petter Jacobsson’s plans for the Ballet de Lorraine.
