There is a distinct French flavour to this month’s Dancing Times, from the cover depicting English National Ballet’s Laurretta Summerscales in Coppélia, that charming comedy ballet performed for the first time in Paris in 1870, to Barbara Newman’s review of English National Opera’s new production of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini in Variety Lights. Nicolas Le Riche, the great étoile of the Paris Opéra Ballet, gives his farewell performance with the company at the Palais Garnier on July 9 and Gerald Dowler interviews him about his illustrious career and his plans for the future. Margaret Willis talks to three dancers from San Francisco Ballet in advance of the company’s three-week season as part of Les Etés de la Danse in the French capital, and we also travel to Nancy to find out about Petter Jacobsson’s plans for the Ballet de Lorraine. Also in this issue, Paul Arrowsmith meets dancer and choreographer Akram Khan on the eve of his 40th birthday, and David Mead talks to Rosemary Lee about the creation of her site-specific dance project in Milton Keynes. Finally, to mark the Maryinsky Ballet’s upcoming season at the Royal Opera House, our Dancer of the Month is the Korean-born Kimin Kim, a rising star of the company.

I think more contemporary dance reviews and dance artists from this discipline are missing. I love the magazine, it only seems to cover mainly ballet and ballroom. Beoordeeld op 15 augustus 2020
