I’ve often wondered why we only get one official day a year to celebrate lesbian visibility. When there are so many incredible people in our community and we still have such a long way to go before we achieve real equality, one lone day is simply not enough. That’s why, ever since I first become publisher of DIVA, I have dreamed of launching Lesbian Visibility Week.
Building on the global Lesbian Visibility Day, which has taken place every 26 April since 2008, Lesbian Visibility Week will provide a platform to challenge stereotypes and celebrate the enduring spirit of women-loving women and non-binary people. I am deeply concerned by the transphobia that is rearing its ugly head within our community. I do not want anyone to associate that prejudice with cis lesbians. I truly hope that Lesbian Visibility Week shines brightly with diversity, uplifts our whole community including bisexual, trans, queer, intersex and non-binary folk, and that the word “lesbian” becomes something we can feel proud of once more.
