There must be thousands of articles online right now about how to be your most productive self while practising social distancing. I’ve certainly read my fair share. Like many others here in the UK, one of my first reactions to the entire country being put on lockdown – besides, is this real life? – was something along the lines of: “Productivity: commence!”
That first weekend, my girlfriend Caro and I scrubbed our small London flat from, er, top to bottom. We lovingly assembled flat pack furniture, re-painted the stairs bright white, sanded and oiled the wooden kitchen worktops and – I kid you not – I started learning Japanese. Though coming out the other side of this with a well-manicured living space and the ability to say, “Could you pass the hand sanitiser?” in another language will be a silver lining, it’s important to realise that this time isn’t about recreating an episode of Changing Rooms, striving to finally find your “one true passion” or levelling up your LinkedIn – this is a pandemic.
