The Petronas FP1 is one of the finest examples of a homologation special, built from the ground up first and foremost for the race track. Arguably, if Petronas could have got around the hassle of producing a road-legal version, there’s little question it’d have been all the happier for it. But that’s not how it works, and if you want to compete in a production-based series such as World Superbikes, you need a homologated production bike to do so. No manufacturer knows that reality better than Ducati, who has made a habit of producing high-spec models in small numbers, oozing sex appeal on the street and offering a winning formula out on track
