This issue of Fieldsports comes from an unusual desk: that of the 28th Proof Master of the London Proof House. In the Volume IX Issue I edition, guest editor David Miles talks about being at the helm of this historic gunmaking institution, which has been testing and stamping proof marks on London Best guns (as well as US cannons, among other things) since 1637.
In this issue, we take a dive into historic institutions such as the Company of Worshipful Gunmakers (and speak to the new Master), and speak to apprentices who are making their own marks on the workbenches of Best shotgun and riflemakers. We also head to the Highlands with hugely-respected Scottish gunmakers McKay Brown for a stonkingly wonderful pheasant shoot, and follow a quiet deer stalk with a hugely respected French engraver.
