There are times when life is ine and self-care is all about a nice bath, a glass of wine and time out from life’s inevitable stresses. But if you’re struggling, then selfcare takes on a whole new meaning. In those situations, looking after yourself isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s medicine. A way to alleviate low mood, missing motivation and to get a break from the stuf that knots you up. ‘Your mental health doesn’t stay the same,’ says psychologist and senior lecturer in mental health, Dr Zoubida Guernina. ‘We all sometimes need to help ourselves a bit more than usual.’ This is a key part of building your self-care toolkit – a set of prompts and goals that can help you get back on track or just enable selfsupport. ‘People who can manage their own feelings tend to feel better whether they’re receiving additional help or not,’ says clinical psychologist Dr Abigael San. ‘Even so, if you’re not enjoying your life, withdrawing from things, or taking time of work, it’s a sign to see your GP. Any support they prescribe will be improved if you also help yourself as much as you can.’ It can be hard to know where to start, which is where this self-care toolkit comes in, to give you some reference points and ideas to make life’s rough patches that bit smoother. Over the next few pages, we’ve highlighted the big topics that can afect mood and, for each, you’ll ind an exercise to help you ind your ix. Fill it in, act on it, or store it away for a time when you need it.
