In a world where we’re hyper-aware that good health, a positive frame of mind and opportunities for growth are beneficial if we can just find the right support, a new type of traveller has emerged – the wellness tourist. Their favourite destination? The retreat – rebooted. ‘Retreats offer an opportunity to get away from everyday life,’ says Jimmy Petruzzi, a coach and therapist who works on retreats (nlp-trainingcourses.com). And the range is huge. ‘From those that support recovery after break-ups to fitness-based weekends and writing retreats, they’re a springboard for those looking to make changes.’
Though research into the benefits of attending retreats is light, one study measuring the impact of a one-week holistic retreat found participants improved across measures including weight loss, mental health and blood-pressure levels – still evident six weeks after returning. Retreats can be best viewed as a space to relax and get new ideas.
