Intel’s Meteor Lake won’t be a desktop part, as there won’t be socketed versions; it’ll be ball grid array packaging only. Due to technical issues, it is to be aimed at mobile platforms. However, it’ll make its way into desktop designs. A company statement claims it “will power innovative mobile and desktop designs, including desktop form factors such as Allin-One”. One reason seems clear from the early benchmarks of engineering samples. An Ultra 7 165H (16 cores, 22 threads, and a 5GHz top clock) has been run through Geekbench, and was as fast as a Core i7-13700H. Nice, but not serious desktop material. We’ll have to wait until the end of next year, and the first Arrow Lake chips. –CL
