People with severe mental ill health such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are more likely to smoke than those in the general population (Szatkowski and McNeill, 2015) and unlike in the general population where the percentage of people who smoke has seen a steady decline, the percentage of people with SMI who smoke has seen little change over the last 20 years.
Despite this, when asked, people with SMI are just as likely to say that they want to do something about their smoking as the general population, however they do not access standard stop smoking services (Szatkowski and McNeill, 2013).
