Many people view food waste as environmentally harmless because it is biodegradable, without realising how dangerous it can be if taken to land fill. Every year more than 380,000 tonnes of food is thrown away in Scotland. It is estimated that dealing with this waste costs the Scottish public more than £1 billion every year.
When waste is sent to landfill, air does not get to the organic waste. As this organic waste breaks down, it creates methane which is a greenhouse gas 34 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
When this same waste is composted at home, oxygen helps the waste to decompose aerobically which means hardly any methane is produced, which is good news for the planet. And furthermore, after 12 months, you get a free fertiliser for your garden to grow more food and repeat the cycle.
