PASSENGERS could soon have a new service between Stirling and London Euston after the Office of Rail and Road agreed that new open access services can operate on the West Coast Main Line between the Scottish city and the UK capital.
In its decision letter dated March 7, access rights were granted for five years from June 2025. While three nonfranchised operators have been granted access rights on the East Coast Main Line, there have so far been no similar services from Euston – although Arriva had been due to begin an open access service to Blackpool using Class 90s and Mk.3 stock until the Covid pandemic put paid to that. The Stirling service is a proposal from Grand Union Trains (GUT), where the expertise of Ian Yeowart as a promoter of open access services has been used to demonstrate that the timetable meets the ORR demand of balancing the provision of open access services with the protection of Government finances from the franchised operators.
Four return weekday services will be operated serving Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds and Larbet. The proposed rolling stock will be Class 221 ‘Super Voyager’ trainsets displaced from Avanti by new Hitachi bi-mode Class 805 units, which will take over the diagrams between Euston and North Wales.
