When life’s busy it can be hard to find the energy for maintaining meaningful relationships. Making friends in the first place is sometimes a challenge, especially if you’re neurodivergent or someone who takes time to feel comfortable with new people.
But friendship takes many forms, from classmates and close companions to people who share your interests. And when a connection’s given a bit of TLC, it tends to find a way to flourish.
What’s really encouraging is that friendship is built in many ways, sometimes without people even realising it. Doing activities that encourage mutual support, like watersports or team games, for example, creates feelings of fellowship and trust.
Spending leisure time together is also a good chance to get to know people better, whether it involves working on a shared art project, heading out shopping or planning a picnic in the sunshine.
Devoting time and energy to relationships has benefits beyond having someone to hang out with too. It’s great to have someone who knows you by your side and it’s rewarding to be there for each other in difficult times, offering support and easing worries.
Of course, this isn’t to say creating connections is easy. Strong friendships take dedication and commitment. But like many things that are important and meaningful, it’s usually worth the effort. And the chances are you’ll have fun along the way.
