Just like oxygen and water, food is something that no creature, big or small, human or non-human, rich or poor, can live without. However, like most things that humans have come to control in our modern world, food has been made a commodity, and as a species, we spend massive amounts of money, time and energy on producing, selling, and buying edible produce.
If you take a walk down your local high street, you will probably come across more food and drink providers (supermarkets, takeaways or eat-in restaurants) than any other kind of business. At home, our fridges sit stufed with fresh goods, our cupboards are stocked full with tins, and our shelves are lined with grab-and-go snacks. We are able to order food at the click of a button, or by speaking for two minutes on the phone. If you turn on the TV or radio, you’re sure to see or hear a food-related advertisement within a mere five minutes of paying attention.
