There are few countries that have such a long and welldocumented history of animal rights activism as the UK and, over the past decade, activism here has hit a new high. The style and techniques may differ to those used when the movement first started, but the passion and determination has not.
It was in year 1970 that British writer, psychologist, and animal rights advocate, Richard Ryder, coined the term “speciesism” to describe the exclusion of non-human animals from the protections available to human beings. Ryder first used the term in a leaflet which he distributed in Oxford in protest against animal experimentation. Nowadays it is commonly found in animal rights literature and documentaries exploring our relationship with other animals.
