We all hear that we should be eating less processed foods and more fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and legumes, but what about spices and herbs? It turns out that we should be including a variety of spices and herbs in our diet on a daily basis! A wide variety of spices (and herbs) should be included in what you eat and drink to ensure a diverse and healthy gut microbiome, which is vital for health and well-being (Peterson et al, 2019). Frequent consumption of spicy food is linked to a lower risk of death from cancer and ischemic heart and respiratory diseases. Bioavailability seems to be enhanced when spices are combined (such as black pepper and turmeric) in the one meal. Diversity of the diet is important for a healthy microbiome and including a variety of spices and combining them is the most optimal way to consume them.
