More than 6.3 million adults aged 40 to 60 fail to do even 10 minutes of continuous brisk walking per month, says Public Health England (PHE). On the back of these concerning findings and as part of its One You Campaign, PHE has launched an app called Active 10, encouraging 10 minutes of brisk walking a day.
I’M 62 AND HAVE BEEN RUNNING FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. LAST SUMMER I BROKE MY ANKLE AND HAD SCREWS PUT INTO IT. I TOOK THE REHAB SLOWLY, BUILDING THE DISTANCE UP GRADUALLY. WHEN I FINALLY DID A 10K RACE I WASN’T AIMING FOR A PB, BUT I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH MY TIME. AT THE MOMENT, I SPLIT MY TRAINING INTO LONG RUNS OF JUST OVER AN HOUR, SOME SPEED SESSIONS AND VISITS TO THE GYM. THREE MONTHS ON, I’M STILL STRUGGLING WITH MY SPEED AND DON’T HAVE THE ENERGY I USED TO. I’M NOT SURE IF THE PROBLEM IS PHYSICAL OR MENTAL?
