One day, last spring, I visited the Lost Gardens of Heligan, an incredibly beautiful place to be in late May when everything is blooming. There were plenty of other gardens in Cornwall to choose from but the name of this one appealed and it set me thinking about the power of words. If the name had simply been Heligan Gardens would I have been drawn to them? Wouldn’t they have simply joined a long list of others – Trewithan Gardens, Penjerrick Gardens? Yes, Heligan was lost, or more accurately uncared for over many years, and now the gardens have been restored and given romance by the careful choice of the word Lost. It was the name and not the place that was the draw. It was the power of the words, and as writers we know all about using the right word at the right time. The name Lost Gardens is what drew me, just as an intriguing title can draw you into reading it a book. Titles (names) are important.
