The owners of this handsome period property wanted to replace their dilapidated extension with a contemporary new design. “They wanted a design that would take full advantage of the sublime surroundings and views, creating a more intimate integration between the indoor and outdoor spaces,” says director and lead architect Carl Challinor.
The starting point was an extension that contrasted with the historic fabric of the original building. Its blockwork structure was clad in porcelain, which stands out from the existing historic masonry. “Limestone terracing is angled to create clean, subtle lines that accentuate the form of the extension and contrast with the darkened cladding,” says Carl.
Views were maximised by gradually unfolding them as you walk through the house. Angled openings and windows create teaser snapshots until the full reveal: 2.6m-high glazed sliding doors lead out onto the terrace, which overlooks the Malvern Hills.
