OSCAR PISTORIUS stunned onlookers in a Pretoria courtroom last week when he took off his prostheses and walked unsteadily across the room in an effort to avoid a heavy jail sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The unexpected move was watched by a mesmerised courtroom and the images then relayed across the world.
Barry Roux, who leads the former Paralympic sprinter’s defence team, said they wanted to show the court that Pistorius was not a “strong, ambitious man winning gold medals”.

In a clear attempt to win the court’s sympathy, he added: “I don’t want to overplay vulnerability … I don’t want to overplay disability … It doesn’t mean because he’s vulnerable that he can do what he likes. But please let’s understand … who is this man that you must sentence?”
