OUR FIRST GLIMPSE of the subject of this fascinating documentary is on a TV show in LA. It’s the early ’70, she’s wearing aviator glasses and an enormous auburn Afro, and the host is asking her about her new album. Did it all come about from the hospital therapist handing her a typewriter and telling her to write? Well it was a better option than making baskets, she replies. Her doctor suggested she write down what she was thinking and feeling, and that’s what she did, in the most honest, uncensored and unique way. She wrote the words as lyrics, then taught herself to play guitar and wrote the music. “I died in this album,” she said, “and came back to life.”
