The most famous of the woodcuts that make up Dürer’s Apocalypse series of 1498 is that depicting the ‘Four Horsemen’. Part of the set sold by Christie’s Paris for €346,000 (£301,020).
Conducted by Christie’s Paris (25/20/12.5% buyer’s premium) in collaboration with Bertrand Meaudre of Paris dealer Librairie Landarchet, a February 20 sale featured the dispersal of the library of Marc Litzler for a premium-inclusive total of €4.4m (£3.82m).
Highlights included, at the top of the price lists, a first edition of Dürer’s famous Apocalypse set of woodcuts. Depicting scenes from the Book of Revelation, this was the work, published in 1498 in Nuremburg in both German (as here) and Latin text versions, that brought Dürer fame and fortune.
