UNITED STATES took gold in a final that was missing Great Britain following a controversial disqualification in the heats.
Anchored by LaShawn Merritt, America stormed to victory in 2:57.30 ahead of Jamaica and 2012 champions Bahamas, but the big talking point was the DQ of GB after they had beaten Belgium and Bahamas to win their heat.

Nigel Levine, Delano Williams, Matthew Hudson-Smith and Martyn Rooney ran superbly to qualify with splits of 45.7, 44.0, 45.3 and 43.8 in a time of 2:58.88 that would have placed them fifth in the final if they had been allowed to run.
