Autism Parenting  |  Issue 183
October can be a vibrant month with leaves changing colors and a chill in the air. The dark creeps in earlier each day as shadows loom large from bare branches that reach out like a gnarled hand. It’s a month of cute pumpkin faces and spooky decorations. While ghosts and witch costumes can be scary, so can the reality of bullying that happens each day in school and even online. Our theme this month is Understanding and Addressing Bullying in Autism. Helping our children understand and address this issue is just as important as helping them learn daily living skills or how to regulate their emotions. Parents and caregivers need to be able to recognize and know the signs so they can help their own child or someone else, especially on the spectrum, who is being bullied. Having a chill because of the weather, a spooky mask, or a creepy spiderweb can be fun. Feeling afraid because of another person’s taunts or bullying behavior is unacceptable. We hope you take away some helpful information to keep your child happy and safe from bullies. Now watch out for any low-flying bats, spooky skeletons, and glowing jack-o-lanterns!
