SOME topics will never be resolved and will never go away. One is, just
what constitutes a classic? A truck from the fifties or sixties, maybe? Anything that is over 25 years old, perhaps? Rather a matter of personal opinion. So, too, is the thorny subject of originality. Should it be adhered to rigidly? Or should we take the view that lorries were modified and
adapted during their working lives – purely to keep them on the road – so what’s wrong with doing the same today? If you fancy a long night, buy yourself a pint, sit among a bunch of classic truck fans and start the debate. Actually, make that a few pints. The other debate that causes much gnashing of teeth is charging owners to enter their vehicles in shows and rallies. I mention it yet again because I’ve had a few letters on the subject, from enthusiasts who feel irritated that they should be asked to part with cash when, after all, it is their vehicles that make events possible in the first place. Now, this really is a tough one to take a stance on because every show has to be judged on its merits. However, I take the view that if an event is being organized professionally and for profit, then it is unfair to expect owners to pay up. The fact that they are providing the very reason the show exists is, in my opinion,
contribution enough. But if an event is being organized privately by enthusiasts who are giving up their time to make it happen, they do have
a right to ask for a few bob to help out. Put it this way, it costs money to hire a venue, marshals etc and the organizers shouldn’t be expected to pay for that out of their own pockets. Just my overall view and, as I said, each event is different. Talking of events, please do make a note of 27 April, that’s Drive-it Day when you all get the chance to tell the world just how strong and relevant the classic movement is. If you can’t actually get out on the road, try to park your lorry where it can be seen. It’s important.
