Friluftsliv, loosely translated as ‘open-air life’, is all about embracing nature. It was coined by Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen in 1859. Since then, like so many things, it has been misappropriated and commercialised, and all-too-often focused on ‘activities’, rather than a pure-and-simple relationship with nature. Hans Gelter, associate professor of arts, communication and education at the Luleå University of Technology in Sweden, explains how to achieve genuine friluftsliv.
