Trunk roads operator BEAR Scotland says it is aware of damage caused to the bridge at Spean Bridge last week and is arranging to have repairs carried out as quickly as possible. According to John Fotheringhgam, chairman of Spean Bridge, Roy Bridge and Achnacarry Community Council, the damage to several coping stones on the Telford bridge was caused by a lorry carrying turbine parts around 7.30pm last Wednesday evening. Mr Fotheringham informed BEAR Scotland: ‘During the turning manoeuvre at the north side of the Telford bridge, the vehicle or cargo hit the bridge moving the top two coping stones. I would appreciate if the stones were cemented back in place at your earliest opportunity and that you instruct delivery drivers to take greater care when manoeuvring loads at this point. We will be monitoring the situation.’
Asked to comment, a BEAR Scotland spokesperson told the Lochaber Times: ‘We are aware of the incident on Spean Bridge and one of our inspectors is assessing the damage. ‘Initial indications are that the damage is relatively minimal and there does not appear to be any risk to the public or to the structure. ‘We will arrange to have any damage repaired as soon as possible.’
